International travel drives Swedavia’s recovery

In August, 2.44 million passengers travelled via Arlanda, 2 per cent more than in the same month in 2025.

But here too, it is international traffic that is driving the recovery. International travel was 3 per cent higher than in 2019, while domestic travel remained 15 per cent below pre-pandemic levels.

Arlanda has therefore surpassed its 2019 level for international traffic, while Swedish domestic traffic still has some way to go.

Landvetter: domestic traffic 56 per cent below 2019

Göteborg Landvetter had 566,000 travellers in August, 4 per cent more than in the same month last year. Compared with 2019, however, the airport remains 10 per cent lower.

The difference between the traffic segments is considerable.

International travel was 2 per cent below 2019 levels. Domestic travel was as much as 56 per cent lower.

At the same time, airlines continue to expand their international offering from Gothenburg. In August, Etihad Airways announced that it will launch a direct route between Gothenburg and Abu Dhabi in December. Following strong demand, the route has now been extended to operate year-round.

Malmö almost halved compared with 2019

Malmö Airport recorded strong growth compared with last year. Overall, passenger numbers rose by 16 per cent to just over 92,000.

Despite this, the airport is still far from pre-pandemic levels. Compared with August 2019, total passenger traffic is 49 per cent lower.

International traffic is 35 per cent below 2019 levels, while domestic traffic is as much as 68 per cent lower.

The sharp year-on-year increase therefore comes from a considerably lower level than before the pandemic.

Bromma: up 385 per cent – but 95 per cent below 2019

Stockholm Bromma recorded the largest percentage increase compared with last year. Traffic rose by 385 per cent.

In absolute terms, however, the increase is considerably less dramatic. The airport had just under 9,700 passengers in August, an average of 312 passengers per day.

Compared with August 2019, traffic is still around 95 per cent lower.

Development is also mixed among Swedavia's other airports.

Luleå increased by 6 per cent overall compared with August 2025 and is 8 per cent below 2019 levels.

Umeå, on the other hand, declined by 5 per cent year on year and is 21 per cent below 2019 levels.

Visby increased by 13 per cent compared with last year, but is still 32 per cent below 2019 levels.

Åre Östersund increased by 8 per cent over the year, but is 50 per cent below the level recorded in August 2019.

This means that, while several of the airports are seeing positive growth compared with last year, the recovery since the pandemic is far from complete.

The August figures therefore confirm the trend that Swedavia has observed during the summer.

International travel is now approaching 2019 levels at the group's airports. At Arlanda, international traffic is already higher than before the pandemic.

The situation is different for domestic flights. Despite an increase compared with August 2025, volumes are still 37 per cent lower than in 2019.
