Record summer for Kastrup - nearly 10 million travellers

Kastrup had its strongest summer season ever. A total of 9.9 million travellers passed through the airport during the year's three summer months. In August, the figure reached 3.3 million, according to a press release.

This means that Copenhagen Airport continues to grow as a hub for both Danish and Swedish travellers.

- We have never before had so many summer travellers in the airport's history. With more than 100,000 passengers on most days, it is equivalent to hosting the Roskilde Festival every day throughout the summer, says Peter Krogsgaard, Chief Commercial Officer at Copenhagen Airports.

Spain on top – Italy growing the most

Southern Europe continues to dominate holiday travel from Kastrup. Spain retains its position as the largest market, with 789,000 travellers between June and August, three per cent more than last summer.

Italy is growing considerably faster. A total of 714,000 passengers travelled between Copenhagen and Italy, an increase of 10 per cent.

Together, Spain, Italy, France, Greece and Turkey accounted for 2.9 million journeys during the summer.

According to Copenhagen Airports, airlines have increased capacity on several of the most popular Southern European routes. The strong air traffic works both ways at the same time: more Southern European tourists are also choosing to travel to Denmark.

Asia drives long-haul aviation

European traffic still accounts for around 80 per cent of travel from Kastrup. However, long-haul aviation is growing faster.

During the summer, 1.5 million passengers travelled on long-haul routes to and from Copenhagen. This represents an increase of 5 per cent compared with the previous year.

Asia is the clearest driver of growth. During the period, Kastrup has, among other things, gained new direct routes to Ho Chi Minh City and Seoul. At the same time, the number of departures to Tokyo, Shanghai and Beijing has increased.

- The routes to Asia are performing very well, and we expect demand to remain strong throughout the winter, says Peter Krogsgaard.

In total, there were 37 long-haul routes from Kastrup during the summer, with destinations in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and North America.

For the Swedish travel market, the development is particularly interesting. Kastrup has long been an important alternative to Swedish airports for travellers in southern Sweden – and record traffic during the summer strengthens the airport's position as an international hub in the region.
