E4 to be widened in Arlanda initiative

E4 is being widened to strengthen Arlanda as a Nordic aviation hub.

This was announced by the Minister for Infrastructure, Andreas Carlson (KD), during a trip to the airport on Friday. This is reported by Sveriges Radio.

- The government will have an 'Arlanda package' in the national plan that we will present shortly, and today I can announce that part of it is a much-anticipated widening of the E4 between Häggvik and Rotebro, says Andreas Carlson.

The investment comes at a time when Arlanda has repeatedly been the subject of debate regarding capacity, accessibility, and competitiveness compared to other Nordic airports such as Copenhagen, Oslo, and Helsinki. Travel News has for a long time reported on how land access - including road and rail connections - has been highlighted as one of the airport's structural challenges.

At the same time, issues of congestion, logistics flows, and perceived travel time to and from the airport have been recurring in the industry's discussions about Arlanda's long-term attractiveness.

The government now describes the measure as part of a broader 'Arlanda package', which will be presented within the framework of the national infrastructure plan. The goal is to strengthen the airport's role as a Nordic hub.
