SAS signals major news - promises major investment in Kastrup

SAS is promising a major investment in Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup. Chief executive Anko van der Werff revealed this during Almedalen Week - but he is saving the details for a press conference on Tuesday.

Travel News has received an invitation to the press conference where SAS writes that Anko van der Werff will make a "major announcement". Travel News will be there.

At an Öresund gathering in Almedalen, the SAS chief pointed to Kastrup as the company’s most important future hub, as Sydsvenskan has reported.

- We believe we can achieve significant growth there. By the end of this decade, we could reach 40 million passengers, said Anko van der Werff.

Kastrup had just over 32 million passengers in 2025. According to SAS, the growth will come through more routes, increased capacity and a clearer role for Copenhagen as the company’s main hub.

When the CEO was asked what to expect on Tuesday, he did not want to reveal any details.

- It is big news, but I cannot say any more right now. Stay tuned, he said, adding with a smile: "Don't get me in trouble."

At the same time, he dismissed speculation that the announcement would be about SAS moving its head office from Stockholm to Copenhagen.

- It has nothing to do with that. It is just a sign on a building - this is much bigger.

Ever since Air France-KLM became the majority owner of SAS, there has been speculation that Copenhagen will be given an even more important role in the group’s European route network. Air France-KLM chief executive Benjamin Smith has previously said that, in the longer term, Copenhagen is to be developed into an important transfer hub, not least because the airports in Paris and Amsterdam are approaching their capacity limits.

What SAS now intends to present remains to be seen. Travel News is reporting live from Tuesday’s press conference.
