Travel from the USA to Sweden increases significantly - up 58 percent since 2019

Travel from the USA to Sweden continues to grow rapidly. New figures from Tillväxtverket show that the number of American overnight stays increased by 58 percent in 2025 compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

The USA thus consolidates its position as one of Sweden's most important long-haul markets - while travel patterns are changing. More and more Americans are travelling to Sweden year-round, not just during the summer months. This is according to a press release from Visit Sweden.

A full 96.5 per cent of American visitors stay in hotels, which underscores the importance of established hotel capacity and strong urban hubs. Stockholm continues to dominate as a gateway, accounting for over half of all American overnight stays. This is followed by West Sweden with Gothenburg and Skåne.

Summer is still the largest travel period, accounting for about 40 per cent of overnight stays between June and August. But the strongest growth is occurring outside the high season. Travel during other parts of the year increased by 64.6 per cent compared to 2019 - clearly more than the summer increase of 48.5 per cent.

The development points to a changed behaviour where American travellers are increasingly seeking Sweden during other parts of the year. The interest is driven, among other things, by a cooler climate, an increased focus on experience-based travel and longer stays.

A geographical broadening is also visible. In addition to the metropolitan regions, interest is increasing for destinations such as Dalarna and northern Sweden, where nature experiences, wellness and large open landscapes attract. Seasonal variations such as the midnight sun and northern lights also contribute to spreading travel throughout the year.

Overall, the development strengthens Sweden's position as a destination where the combination of city life, nature, and distinct seasonal contrasts drives demand far beyond the summer season.
