"Bromma's revenue does not cover the airport's costs"

Swedavia's commercial director, Aron Backström, responds to criticism from Västflyg, Brommaflyg and Skåne Aviation.

"We want Swedavia to openly report how it has analysed the effects of the fee changes on competition between Arlanda and Bromma," wrote Jens Harrysson, Anna Petre and Henrik Svensson in an opinion article published on Travel News earlier today.

Aron Backström, Swedavia's chief commercial officer, responds here:

Swedish connectivity is currently not good enough, and strengthening it, both domestically and internationally, is important for Sweden's competitiveness and for keeping the country connected. Arlanda has a central role in this. To develop the airport as a strong hub, we need to strengthen the interaction between domestic and international traffic, increase competition and create better conditions for good connections. The new fee model is part of that ambition.

At the same time, we need to recognise that our airports have different long-term conditions. Bromma's current lease agreement runs until 2038, and the land must be remediated before then.

The area will then be taken over by the City of Stockholm. Revenue from airlines at Bromma is also far from covering the airport's costs. These are circumstances that need to be taken into account in how we develop and invest in the overall airport system.
