Ferries between Stockholm and Helsinki slow down

Rising fuel prices force shipping companies to adjust schedules and reduce speed to save costs.

Ferry traffic between Stockholm and Helsinki is now affected by rising fuel prices in the wake of increased unrest in the Middle East. According to the Finnish public service company Yle, several shipping companies are choosing to reduce the speed of their ships to decrease fuel consumption.

The measure involves adjusted timetables. Departures are brought forward while arrival times are delayed, which in practice gives travellers slightly less time on land.

Behind the decision lies a clear cost picture. Fuel is one of the largest expense items for shipping companies, and even minor speed reductions can provide significant savings. The strategy is repeatedly used in shipping during sharp energy price increases.

By adjusting the speed, the shipping companies are trying to avoid passing on the cost increases directly to customers through higher ticket prices.
