Millions lost for Dubai - goal postponed
Dubai International Airport postpones the ambition to reach 100 million passengers this year. The background is the effects of the war between the USA and Israel against Iran, which has severely impacted air traffic in the region.
In March, the number of passengers fell by a full 66 percent. Even looking at the first quarter, the trend is clear: 2.5 million travellers, a decrease of 21 percent compared to the same period last year.
- Our forecast was to reach the dream limit of 100 million passengers already this year, but now it looks like it will be delayed until 2027, says airport director Paul Griffiths to Bloomberg Television.
He is also expecting a recovery in the coming months. So far, however, only 51 of 90 airlines have resumed traffic that was stopped in connection with the conflict.
Dubai International Airport is normally one of the world's busiest airports.
The war, which began at the end of February, has led to extensive disruptions in air traffic throughout the Middle East. Over the weekend, the United Arab Emirates lifted the last restrictions previously imposed on aviation.
